how do i keep my 3 and 5 year olds interested in detecting while i am detecting. usually when i take them im good for about 20 minutes, before they start picking on each other and tormenting me to go home. Ive tried letting them dig but that usually ends up with the area looking like a sandbox.I just want to be able to spend time with my kids and do something i enjoy.
Thanks all.

I got quintuplets and it ain't easy. They are 8 years old now and its getting better. One of them is really into it. The others not so much. Good luck.

What usually helps me, I have a 5 yr old, is going to the parks. Where he can play while I have fun. Other places, well, I take my 8 yr old along and they play ball, cars, whatever they can have fun with. The portable DVD player works well! Batteries only last a few hours, but that's more than enough time for me to know if the spot I am at is good or not. Good luck to you!

For kids who are maybe 5-10 or so, I would recommend a pinpoint probe.  They're useful once you've detected an interesting target with your detector, and are trying to zero in on it to dig it up.  They cost around $40 (U.S.).  That might keep their interest a little longer. :Smiley

What really works for me is to just tie them up, make sure you put a gag in their mouths or people walking by the car will hear them, oh make sure you cover them up with a blanket. No just kidding, I find that if I get really excited that they will also get excited and the attention span will last longer, pretend you are digging up pirate treasure, when the penny comes up then tell them that another pirate must have gotten there before you. things like that work great, my son however has his own MD and does just fine buts he's also nine, daughter is 7 she is the one that I play with and get her into it. but other than that good luck with the kids.

Even though detecting with toddlers sounds interesting, I find that using a metal detector is a much surer way of locating treasure.

Ok. Kidding aside, bring along some toys and bury them. Let the kids dig them as pretend treasure. Give them a box and let them dig a hole for it somewhere that is unobtrusive and they can leave their own treasure. Sort of like geocaching for tots. Next time you go there, you can dig it up or discover that it's gone. How's that for fun?

Hey, GD, it must've been your kids' matchbox cars I dug up last weekend!   Smiley

My baby is 25 and a lawyer. She gave up matchbox cars a long time ago.

How did this happen? How did that gorgeous child get to be that old? More importantly, how did my oldest get to be 45?

Never mind answering. Time for my nap.

don't lose your time trying if you don't have the proper tools.
