Hey Cool Welcome to the forum.

First we need to know what & where you are going to hunt plus what your budget is. There is lots of info here about detectors for beginners I suggest you try the search at the top right of page and  look over the older post.

Greetings from Australia.

BFO is old technology. Don't give that much thought. VLF/TR has superior discrimination but is not perfect by any means. PI is gaining favor for hunting relics and your area is full of them.

You choice should be either VLF/TR or PI. Go to your local detector shop and ask which is doing the best in your area or the area you want to work. Or, like Seldom says, give more details of what you want to do.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

If you can aford it the Garrett Scorpion is a great machine but it is really not for the newbi, it could be if you are willing to learn that machine I have hit iron nails at 14 inches.

I have more time than money...Is there a good general purpose metal detector I could build rather than buy. I am fairly technical, so complexity is not an issue.

Check our Tech Talk boards....you'll find the "perfect" project for you there.   (just be aware that in the end, you may pay more building your own than you would have if you had bought a good used detector).
