That's an easy fix. Take your wife's hair dryer, heat the plastic just above the crimped area on the piece inside the shaft and step on it after it gets soft or clamp it in a vice. Do the heating very slowly by turning the shaft as you do it. Drill a hole, round the edges a bit and sneak back into the bathroom to put your wife's hair dryer back without getting caught. Stealth counts here, mate. Tiptoe.

The way plumbers do it is to use a car exhaust fitting and run it through the entire pipe but that's overkill for what you need to do.

By the way, it's customary to introduce oneself in the New User section. In spite of that social slip, I send greetings and welcome from the Perth side of the island.

Yep! It looks like someone replace the Bottom of shaft with PVC.   That is NOT the original.

As GD said, you can just re crimp that peace.   Boiling water will get it hot enough to mash in a vise or by hand with pliers.

Delrin works better and can be had through suppliers of electrical stuff.

Worst come to Worst just order the bottom shaft from Garrett.

I have one in the same shape and need to Repair it.   That one is Original and just need to Grind it down and drill the hole.

It must have been more than 15 years ago that someone wrote an article in one of the treasure magazines saying that you could get extra depth from the Groundhog by changing the lower shaft to PVC. I tried it and returned to the aluminum shaft right away. Believe it or not the wiggle of the coil caused more problems with pinpointing than it was worth. It looks like that's what happened here. Someone read the article and changed the end over to PVC. I believe PVC needs a bit more than boiling water to soften enough.

Like you say, I'd recommend the better option of a solid extension rod over the PVC pipe or an original from Garrett.

make a sleeve repair with a over sized bit of pvc -- the same way you would join 2 pieces of pvc piping - use the proper pvc gule then put it on top end let dry then put gule on bottom end shove together make sure bottom is in correct alinement before it sets !

Ivan, that won't work because the coils on the Groundhog are way too heavy for that. He's going to need to get the end of his coil rod warm enough to nearly melt and then squeeze the end in a vice to remanufacture the tip. I suggest a heat gun or shoving it up the exhaust pipe of his car long enough to soften it. He can also buy a new piece of PVC for a few dollars if he needs it to be longer.

how about a sleeve over it ----then drill thru it at both the top and bottom and use a nut and bolt  thru it?
