So I've had this Micronta 4000 for ten years and never used it.  I bought it on vacation in Idaho ten years ago thinking I would use it there but ran out of time.  But my interest is back and I'm about to come into a lot of free time.  I even bought a beginner model for my grandson for Christmas so we can go out together and have a hobby.  I'm still unsure about the best tools.  I have used an ice pick for a probe, along with a hand held weed popper and a butter knife and garden spade.  Sophisticated stuff.  I hope my wife gets interested so I can buy me...I mean buy her a new Garrett Scorpion gold stinger.  Mainly this model because its one I can afford and gets you in the range of the gold-finding detectors.  But I will post that on another area and await to hear opinions for the experienced.

The best tool is the one that works and which creates the least noticeable evidence that you've been there.    For well-watered lawns, your choices are good.   When you get into dried caliche and other concrete like surfaces, you'll need to expand your tool collection to include something sharper and sturdier....you'll find several of those discussed in past posts
(including this one which is my all purpose digger

That's a pretty spiffy tool.  I'm around alot of hard soil now, so I should get one.
