Not all coil related but in fact the biggest cause of erratic problems with a detector that used to work just fine is mechanical. By that I mean broken or loose wires, dirty contact points inside potentiometers, faulty battery connections, coil connectors or other connections inside of the box itself. Most can be found by visual inspection. That's the good news. Do a good visual inspection inside and out and you will probably find the cause.
Before you go and open your unit, be sure that it's no longer under warranty. If it is, let the manufacturer have a go at fixing it for you.
Since you indicate that the problem moves from one detector to another when you swap the coil around, it's most likely to be the coil connector at the box or near the other end by the coil. Try jiggling it and pushing the wire into the connector housing when the erratic behavior starts. Try that at both ends. Let me know what happens.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
