Hey I want to get started a little more than metal detecting around a couple of local public parks.  Does anyone know of places in north Louisiana, east Texas, south Arkansas, or west Mississippi that allow metal detecting?

Welcome from Australia.

To answer your question, it would be more unusual to find one that doesn't.

National Parks and some State Parks are normally off limits but almost all public parks are just fine.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I have done local school playgrounds and a couple of city parks that allow hunting.  I have found some loose change (less than $5 overall, but that is more than I had in my pocket when I started.  I have worked my yard.  I was amazed at how many old nails and decking screws I found.  Hopefully this will help me from puncturing my lawn mower tires in the future.  But heck, it's fun, and that is the important part.  Thanks.
