I live in a house that was built in 1917 and have done some MDing around the property.  The problem I am having is there is too much metal in the ground.  I feel like I have toi dig every target since I an looking for artifacts as well as coins, but I have dug dozens of nails and bolts, an old children's shovel, barrel rings, etc.  I have also found a 1918 penny, some early bakery tokens and a ring, so I don't feel totally lost, but any advice on limiting the trash?

Trash can mask a smaller target below it. You've made the right decision to dig it all. Stick with it. Over time, the trash will disappear because you have removed it. The next time you go over an area you cleaned, listen for the soft whisper of deep targets and dig your reward.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hi Tig, welcome to the group.

You don't say what type of detector you have.   Since you actually live in the house, I'd recommend that you continue as you are (at least most of the time).  It will take you a while to clear out the junk, but once you get it cleared out, you'll find your percentage of good finds increasing.   In the meantime, you could always save the junk in a barrel or something and sell it as scrap.

If you didn't have such regular access to the house, I'd recommend switching to either coin or jewelry mode.   That will mask out most of the junk.   If you have a custom notch setting like the Garrett's have you might try just eliminating the nails (note how they read on your meter and then de-select that notch).    Even living in the house, you might want to follow this option sometimes, just to keep things fun.

I would also suggest to dig out everything Smiley You never know what You gonna get... I would even make 5x5 meters square to dig out every signal in this square and then continue to next square.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.  My detector is also one of my best finds, found in in a trash can behind my brother-in laws house!  Put new batteries in and it worked!
It is a Garret Master Hunter 1 ADS  VLF/TR.
I havn't used it a lot, but was ablke to get a manual for it and have been working the yard!

Your doing the right thing by digging everything. You never know what you may find.
