Why did it have  a  marble  inside ?

The Marble is trapped in the top even when up right but it is to restrict the flow rate and if you tip it completely up side down it will shut off the Flow,

If you look at the middle bottle on the second picture you can see a V shape in the neck of it pointing to the right and the Marble would roll around the outer edges of that V going up the neck blocking the flow as it rolls to the top.

Yeah it quite a clever idea, I guess it would work in reverse if the Marble had Air in it, Then the air would make it rise and block it off sealing it up again, Aye

That's because as old as we all are, we aren't that old.   These bottles were patented in 1873....and we all know how rare it is to find old bottles.   (and for the reasons already mentioned---kids breaking them to get the marbles, these are rarer than most of the same each).   Crown bottle caps pretty much did away with the need for these.

For those of you REALLY interested....checkout (and download) this pdf file.
