I have to agree that alot of rhe lost mine stories are alot alike, but isn't looking for them alot like a kid telling Santa what he want's for Christmas? Wanting and getting are 2 different things. We would all love to find a lost mine. They may be real, they may not. People will spend life times trying to find them. The Victorio Peak mine comes to mind, as does the Dutchman.   But look at the bright side, the more research people do on these lost mines, more books are sold, or people spend more time at the library, or on the computer.  So in the long run, look at all the jobs that are being saved and/or created because of these stories.

Good luck to all mine hunters, at least you shouldn't be finding ant pull tabs.

Bill

Most people who spend thier lives hunting lost treasures and mines don't spend enough time researching usually. Even as little as an hour of research can save years of wandering aimlessly...

Hello All

Some wise words have been posted. Good research is key to giving the best chance possible for success.

Most mines have not been lost but abandoned, either worked out or uneconomical to work. The lost mine genre is predominantly evolved around regions with gold rushes and became the holy grail of prospectors. The image of a fabulously rich mine waiting to wait re-discovery was more than an enticement to chase the dream.

That said every lost treasure story has to be judged on its merits.

Hardluck

...yep, which is part of the reason I've always put more credence in the Lost Adams than I have the Lost Dutchman---but that will come up in the Lost Adams thread--just like why the Dutchman doesn't make a lot of sense (at least as a mine) came out in that one.

Like Hardluck said "Most mines have not been lost but abandoned"

The Adams is one of the few that was lost most are just legends built around a few facts and blown out of proportion by storytellers and writers. Just like most treasure legends have been blown up to millions of dollars when in fact they are only a few grand.

I know of a lost gold vein. This gold was lost before the mine was even started, due to a land slide.
Like Hardluck said most mines have been abandoned not lost.  Lots of these have been re opened when the gold price is right. New technology to survey the ground and ore size...

Some years ago in the late 80s I found an old mine and explore the diggings. When I returned home I did a little fact finding and came to find out the whole operation was a scam to lure eastern investers. The gold mine produced wealth but never had a spec of color.  Grin

It's hard to trust a lost mine story unless there are assay reports or at least verifiable witnesses of quality. The ones that have a man with no name finding a bag full of gold and showing it to someone in a back alley before being shot, stabbed, or dieing of malaria beware!

You got some good points there Jones. One day I think we should set up a thread to investigate the different scams involving lost mines and treasure. It seems that when the economy gets in the dumps new cons surface. Maps, mines, hoards you name it.

Hello All

There is another thing years ago people was into speculating in mining leases. Thousands of sites pegged out as mine lease bought up on the pretext of anything of value may be found there. This tied up mining land for years until governments started charging annual fees.
