You might also want to research the stage routes between San Diego and Yuma and between San Diego and Los Angeles.........Also, get some old California highway maps and old San Diego maps and look for towns that aren't there any more and highways that have been shifted from one route alignment to another.   (and don't forget the OLD rest stops on the old highway alignments....they got used a lot more back in the day than they do now).

By the way, I'm going to move this to the California board (it'll make it easier for you to check previous posts and help someone else in the future.
