The problem that we have here in Germany ( where in some states like bavaria the regulations for detecting are absolutely not restrictive ) is that the state only requires that:

1. You are not allowed to detect on historical sites like castles, known ancient settlements, places were ancient graves are, ect ect.
To be sure not to detect on those forbidden places there is a tool at the internet where you can look if at the place where you want to go is ok or not.

2.
Things you found has to be presented to the local antiques office ( normally they just want to see real old finds )
The antiques office then register the find with all details ( therefore you must have a GPS with you ) and when they are finished you get back your finds.

Realy simple.... but...we have in germany much more detecting people than people who really present their finds to the officials. And...what makes me realy angry...also some idiots which go to known ancient places at night to open celtic graves !

We had this problem about one yera ago. One idiot get caught while he was openening a celtic grave mound. Of course he also had an detecor with him. So now you can think about what the newspapers wrote... and what the people in this area think when they see you in a "no problem" area....... "Grave robbers at work, lets call the police"

Ahh, forgot one point.

This lance was found in a non archeology site and i am presenting all my finds to the officials and get it back. So i have no fear that police or any one else would come to me.

MrSimpson;

It sounds to me like you could do some additional rump covering with good digital photos, with  a well marked meter stick, in the frame, some sketches, and depth measurements.... as well as the GPS readings. Wise

Perhaps the buddy system could also provide corroboration, of any finds, by either person?? If you established a system, like that, it could go a long way toward stalling off those who are against metal detecting. It would demonstrate genuine interest and care, in pursuit of the hobby. You have heard the saying: fore warned is fore armed... well this would be like fore armed is fore  warned. Funny Hey! Offer some classes in ethical metal locating.

Fortunately, the VERY ancient history, here, has very low metal content, but there can be an occasional copper implement. (I have never been lucky enough.)

The best local find, that I have seen was a donut shaped button of Phyllite schist, found in a cave, 83 km from here, by a UBC (official) dig conducted by professor Knut Fladmark.... he estimated 10,000 years, for an age. It worked with a leather thong, much like a saddle cinch ring, although it could not have been more than a clothing or personal article, as Phyllite schist is very soft and flaky. (easy to form)

This cave (which I frequented as a child) has a HUGE  stone at the entrance, and there is a meter gap, between it and the cave.... this is where they dug, mostly.
