Going through some of my stuff last night and remembered finding this lovely little coin about a decade ago. It had been hiding for who knows how long, over six inches deep in some very rich, black, soil, three feet out from the trunk of an old (app.120 years) Red Pine. This tree towered above the oldest park, on the edge of a little village, near Ottawa. They used to hold "revival meetings" back in the late 1800's and early 1900's in there. Now as you may or may not know, I live in Canada and Canadian coins are the norm up in here. Any American coin is a bonus. As a matter of fact, I even cherish the beautiful patina colored wheaties that I slowly gather around some of my older haunts up here.
Anyway, as I gently wiped the pungent and highly acidic soil away from this little silver disc, and started to see some of it's features showing through, I just about had a heart attack. I had to carefully flip it over to check the other side to confirm that YES, I had unearthed an actual real treasure. When I realized just what I was looking at and in possession of, a big glow thing hit me, like
Major rush!
Immediately, it became my koolest coin ever. I had never even seen one up to that point, just pictures in books. Man I love when stuff from a book makes an actual appearance in my grubby little hand!
But you know, there is something about this little beauty that makes it still, to this day, my very favorite silver coin of any country, ever to be minted.
I've only found a few others by this designer in the last ten years and I hold on to each and every one of them. They'll probably have to pry them from my stiff dead fingers when I croak.
Another thing I like about these sweet coins is, you can look up the actual mintages of them, right down to the mintmark. Now, subtract, who knows how many tons were destroyed by the government (lost due to the great Silver Melt) and then add to that how many years have passed since these gorgeous pieces of American Monetary History, were minted. What have you got left? Well, I'd say, a very wonderful and who knows How rare, silver beauty from our past, and to me, almost priceless.
Anyone else in here ever feel that "something special" feeling that I'm talking about, for a coin?
Or felt it with a Mercury dime even? I've had gold coins dropped into my hand once or twice before by people with more moola than I'll ever have, and yet they caused no such "rush" reaction thingy, that I feel for Merc's.
Have a great day folks,
LarryB
