I can tell you right now that we have quite a few of our members who believe them to the point of citing them as indespensible proof that those of us who don't believe in signs and store rooms of gold are the ones that are delusional.

Shoot stories like these probably shaped most of us here at some point. Maybe you didn't really believe but probably wanted to. Smiley

Definitely WANTED to....but that applies to a lot of things.  Then again, every time I find myself starting to get too uppity and too adamant that something HAS to be just  a legend, I remember the story of Heinrich Schliemann and Troy and how everyone thought he was completely crazy (instead of just partly  Wink )

I buy and sell lots of the old treasure mags and still get a kick out of reading some of the stories, but the letters are my favorite and somethings never change. Every few months someone has found the lost Dutchman but needs money, or the Beale code decoded but needs money, and of course Kidd's charts figured out but need money.

Yeah I have 10 tons of gold bars I need to move, can you spot me 500$ Seldom?  Wink I love the fact that they always find a new stash every month. Awsome B&W photos of gold bars too! They are like the Weekly World News, you don't really believe it but you just have to read the stories...

BA that's the one that I always try to remember that a lot of legends have some basis in history. Schliemann read a book and found what everyone told him was a myth. Howard Carter had no idea what he had when he found Tut's tomb the first time, it wasn't till Carnarvan cut his funding that he "discovered it" and found out it was an unplundered tomb. And that one was behind a marker rock no less  Grin

Like Zul pointed out though your odds of winning a big payoff are pretty small, but if you play smart and long enough you will probably win something Smiley

If I recall Troy was fourth down and he made it to the sixth layer? Makes you wonder whats under some of the other ancient cities?

I've lost track of how many 'jerichos' there are on the site of the "biblical" Jericho.   Many of the 'tells' are mounds consisting entirely of one town being built up on the rubble and ruin of another.   (although you really don't have to go that far to see less spectacular examples of how rubble piles up to create new street levels....in Lincoln, New Mexicon, the present roadway is between 12 and 24 inches higher than in Billy the Kid's day, and in Trier, Germany, there is (or rather was in the 1970's) a popular restaurant called the "Schaeffers Keller"....it was street level during Roman towns, but is well underground now...not because it sunk but because street level rose).

recycling was big back in the day  Grin look at Cairo and you see the shell of the great pyramid. I was just watching a show on ancient rome the other day which was talking about how they built right over top of one of Nero's finest works.
