I hope everyone had a happy and fulfilling holiday! Now for some fun! I went out to hunt ang watch the grandkids play at the park. when I (we) pulled this thing from the ground. once cleaned up it resembled a meteorite to me. fairly tough white metal, but not magnetic. harder than lead or even silver. Then the crushing observation, see the fourth photo, there is a right angle groove "puddled" into this thing, and an opposing dribble as if this were in a shop and the metal dripped onto the edge of some plate or other straight edged object. the patina is brown and the weight feels close to silver. now let me hear from those of you who know metals. Bismuth? No, this is too heavy...babbit maybe? my next step will probably be to melt this down, but I can't bring myself to it yet.

oh yes, I did try a streak test and it does not mark paper as silver would.

notice in the first photo there are shiny marks where I attacked the piece with a razor saw once I determined it was man made.

Do you have any Red Devil Lye?

I'm thinking it's lead by the Corrosion color.

A drop of Lye on lead will bubble most well.

Specific Gravity of Lead is  11.34.....

Lead oxide is sometimes yellow,

Don' believe it's lead. this is extremely hard for lead. I used to pound sheet lead into armor for my toy soldiers while chewing on a piece as a small child,,,explains a lot actually. But I will give it a shot. I also printed out a specific gravity list, now for the fun. Poptop!

still in the vicinity of the old ball field. I consider it my 'practice field' because of all the assorted iron coming out of the ground along with coins. i dont know enough history of the spot. It (the trash) seems like farm machinery and vehicle related... wife surprised me with a way early birthday party. The kids all chipped in to get me an ACE 250 w/2 coils. It is changing my hunting strategies. I will start a topic on that later.

O.K. ran a test with a saturated solution of lye, no perceivable reaction or change in patina. Then muriatic acid in another location, boiled up pretty good and left behind a blackish residue that comes off easily but leaves the surface blackened. so I saturated the whole thing in 1/4 diluted m. acid and got a pretty good boil going. after rinsing I touched the edge with a file and I think I know what I have now. Nice soft white metal glowing back at me...maybe?? what thinks you, Homefire?

Any Selun Blue Shampo in the house?

It turns silver a cool Colbalt Blue color.

Silver Sulfide is a dark Blue Black color.

You said it was harder then Lead.

O.k. an update on my lump of metal, since I have been rained out today. Took it to the mall and had it tested. Not silver, but I got the weight and did the water displacement at home. s.g. of 4.33. just in the right range for zinc which makes sense. Next step is to put some heat to it to see what temp it drops at. I'm losing interest at this point to tell the truth.
