I can understand places like Madagascar having logs laying on the ground for the picking. But not in the USA on BLM or private land. I just have to believe all the surface logs are gone from those areas.

Sure it's out there but the surface logs are on National Park land where you are not allowed to take anything. That's what I'm talking about. On the BLM land, there are no large surface logs for the taking and you have to dig for it.

Well the one that BA posted is out side the national park so if you go out and look for them you may just be lucky enough to find one you never know  Smiley

That one definitely was NOT on park land.   I made a point of staying away from the park just to avoid any potential hassles.  I will say that this particular log is in a spot with sufficient visibility that I rather doubt it will vanish any time soon.   We also saw some more logs on private property, but big ones that can be seen from the road are really rare outside of the park.

Believe it or not , there are even larger petrified logs than this one in the area that we were hunting......although this one of the larger ones in the wild outside the National Park that the general public can get close to.

If you look for my hat in the second picture, it will give you an idea of the size of this log.

Thats pretty amazeing Bith! Thats neat what it looks like on the inside with all the colors!

Here in Utah they have a state park that is a petrified forrest, it's pretty cool to go and hike around in, there's tons of logs and small pieces.  there is a place near Vernal, Utah where my family and I used to go and hike, and we actually found a five or six foot tall petrified tree still standing, it has since fallen, but it was awesome to actually see it in the ground pointing towards the heavens, it is the only one I've ever seen like that

That may be why it's still there. Most of the surface logs disappeared of gov land years ago with the exception of national parks, etc. Someone might be able to haul them away but they would probably need a permit to do so and that deters a lot of commercial dealers.
