These are not very common and when you find
them normally they are not in very good condition.
This one is considered a 9 with 10 being the best.
It is a Sea Urchin.
Found 2/20/2011

Echinoderm
Goniphorious Lambert (Scotti)
Paw Paw formation
Lower Cret.
Burleson, Tex.

The other specimen is an
Ammonite
Mantelleceras
Paw Paw formation
lower Cret.
Burleson, Tex.
(These ammonites don't get much larger than what you see here.)

I found a lot of other specimens but they are so common and in very poor condition,
I feel they don't warrent using up camera memory.

Very nice.   Great Thanks for posting the pics.

Did it take a lot of clean up to reveal such a nice specimen or did you find it as is?

If you were to review my profile you would see that I am an avid fossil collector.
I have been doing it all my life. I have been asked how I find out where to look
and all I can reply is that I just know.
I was searching a deposit in an area where I had never looked before.
I was aware that what I drove by appeared to be something worth investigating.
As it turned out I was right. The surface of the area was covered with fossil
debris "thick as fleas" most of which is nothing short of worthless.
I was searching the deposit in hopes of finding shark teeth, the Paw Paw is known
to produce some types of shark teeth known as Squalicorax and Cretolamna.
I did not find one single tooth! I became frustrated and was headed back
to my truck when I happen to spot the Urchin.
I could not wait to get home, to show my wife.
My wife knows a nice fossil when she sees one. Kiss   Shocked
Well enough rambling, I will go back out there soon with a different set of eyes.
I was not wearing my glasses at the time. Maybe I will see a little more.
A lot of the specimens found in the Paw Paw deposits are very tiny.
This particular outcropping is one of many that stretches about 30 miles
North to South and surfaces in some obscure places.
This particular outcropping is where a housing project is going in.
That means that the place will not be available long.

The specimen you see is just as I found it. I did little more than rinse it under some water.
Out of all of this type, in my collection and other peoples collections,
I have only seen one specimen still embedded in matrix.

Out4gold and fossils too!

I know the collectors are gonna scream about this one but I would use that as a center piece on a nice necklace. I think the unusual nature and rarity make it equal to any gemstone.

I can't wait to get out gold, rock, gem, meteorite and fossil hounding again, soon!
