Go Up Go Down

Besides the metal material and the bottles that my wife and I found last weekend while we were md'ing up by the old Route 66, I picked up a lot of petrified wood and few other miscellaneous rocks.

The first picture is all of the petrified wood we brought home with us.  There may seem to be a lot there, but we were actually being pretty selective in what we chose.  The area we were hunting in was not far from Petrified Forest National Park.

The second picture is a closer look at some of the more choice pieces or pieces that I considered representative specimens.

The last picture is miscellaneous rocks I picked up.   At  least a couple of them are probably pieces of petrified would that have been naturally tumbled and polished.   The piece at the top center that looks vaguely like a tusk or tooth is a complete mystery to me.  Most of the exterior is a matte black with a couple of areas that are closer to the interior color.   The black outer "rind" ranges in thickness from 1/2 millimeter to about 2 1/2 millimeters thick.    I'll probably wind up taking it in to the Arizona Mining and Mineralogical Museum for identification.

Nice finds. There is a place where I hunted meteorites that was just littered with petrified wood, many with nice crystals! You got me motivated to go on an adventure with my grand kids! Thanks for the pics.

Congrats!                  Ironman

We don't have another trip planned at the moment, but it is close enough that we could do it as a spur of the moment thing on a weekend.   Besides the rocks, I've got to track down the history of a couple of buildings in the area.

I missed this when you first posted it, but I enjoyed looking at the petrified wood and rocks that you found. Neat! Nice to have the location close enough that you could easily return. Sue

I think if we do go back, we'll try to spend the night at the Wigwam Motel (

That's cool - we kind have a similar one here just north of town. The 'units' are gone now, but main teepee is still standing.

Nice haul you've got there, Aggie!  Smiley

I love the partially agatized look of them. Wish we had stuff like that over here in the UK.

What age are we talking here? Are they from the same Triassic deposits as the the Petrified Forest...?
