They've done a great job of preserving that baby.

A great place to visit Hardluck and some great pictures. Smiley

Yes thats the best preserved dredge out of the 3 I've visited in the pacific NW. Sumpter and Granite are all about mining history tourism. They would be deserted ghost towns without it. This is one of my favorite camping areas when I can get there. Beautiful country in the Blue Mountains and several neat attractions like the dredge and some hot springs.  Smiley

Near the old townsite of Woodley and the Camp Carson mine, which is in the same general vicinity of Sumpter, I was 4 wheeling the old roads when I came across another dredge just sitting in the woods rotting away. I didn't get a chance to explore it much that trip and then I didn't get back for 3 or 4 years. I never could find it again, although I can't figure out how a person could lose something that big?  Shocked  Grin

If there open, those tailing are kick but places to detect.

They let a lot of the smaller stuff go out the back side at 16 an 35 $ a once.

Hell there are plenty of specimen stuff out there I bet.

Hello Homefire

There are mining companies that specialize reworking old mine tailing for left over gold content. modern mining method have come along way and have amazing gold processing retrieval methods.

Unfortunately too expensive plant equipment for the small scale miner.

But it still would be fun to sift those old mine tailings.

Hardluck

Some copper dredge sites and now superfund sites as the surrounding water and soil is contaminated from the chemicals used in separation. One I saw in Michigan that has the whole area fenced in and posted.

There are miles of dredge tailings in Oregon and Idaho. Some areas have been reclaimed but there are still a few locations one can sift through.

South of LaGrande, and north of Sumpter pics 1,2&3
Warren Meadows, Idaho
Centerville, Idaho

Just a few of many.
