One of my favorite places on earth. As a kid I spent time fishing the dredge ponds and walking the tailings. I remember exploring the ruins of the old Mayflower mill spread down the hill like some giants tinker toys. Many an old mineshaft was found and scouted. In those days the scars of mining were very visible, today the trees have mostly grown back. A few years ago a forest fire almost wiped out this town, but the great firefighters of Idaho saved it.

Once the home of Polly Bemis, a Chinese gal who was once the prize in a poker game by legend. My grandfather once celebrated the fourth of July by setting off a stick of dynamite in the main (only) street much to the consternation of most of the town I hear. Quite a few folk own summer vacation places here now although I don't know if any stay year round these days. In my days my Grandmother lived in a cabin 14 miles on down the road, and on the bank of the South Fork of the Salmon River.

Here is an old photo from the collection showing the town in the 1920's

It was an awsome place for a kid. In those days almost no one was left there and it was an adventure garden for me. Even back then I was fascinated with the old mines and treasure.  Grin

In the late 60s or early 70s we did some looking at what I always knew as China Gardens now Ah Toy Gardens. It was right up the mountain above Grandma's cabin.

That dugout would have been an irrestible draw on a young boy.

Hello Idahojones

Thanks for the post.

Ah... back to a time when life was so simple.

BA is right it must of been a great place to grow up. Back in days when kids were allowed to be kids. Trees to climb, forts to be made and adventures to be sort. None of the days were a dull moment with none of the toys available today.

It is some thing I fell sorry for the next generation that now rely computer games and all the toys at their command locked away in the cocoon of the cotton wool generation.

There is no greater treasure than having a childhood back in that era.

Warren is a pretty cool place. The Chinese Gardens (they will always be known as that) are beautiful, if you are not from the area take the time to find it... very well worth the effort (if any). Thank God for those firefighters!

Peace

Sean
BTW, Hardluck:

I am the new generation, and while most of my peers are pathetic, sniveling, whining *****... I am not. I can even take care of my self and have a real job, and have had one since before I was legally old enough to work. I don't play video games, cuts into fishing/mining/hunting/detecting/rod building/fly tying/Red Cross Volunteer time.

Peace

Sean
