     they sure were....in fact i found a couple of interesting facts about mining disasters at these particular ghost towns here is a link to this sight, and i recommend you check it out....you can pick any state (don't know about the rest of the world outside of the US) and it will bring up certain key disasters from back in the day...in my researches i found a ghost town area here in utah that i want to go and detect called jackson. i had never even heard of it before....but a train carrying mining explosives got hit by a water train, and the explosion destroyed the buildings of the entire town, and killed quite a few.  here's the link....i hope you all find it interesting
