I'm looking at the prices of GPR systems (MALA is a good brand, sure, but their MIRA system is a few years' wages even in a decent economy) and their capabilities. Software-wise, I can't say I'm impressed by anything out there. It's all massively inferior to where it has any business being, even when in any objective sense it's "fine" and "will do the job". Hardware-wise, I'm not sure what tunable transmitters and receivers of the frequencies involved go for - the cost of the other components is much easier to find out - nor am I up enough on building active systems to know how viable it is to build something of the necessary sensitivity.
Theory is easy, geting quotes from companies is hard (why do you think most don't list them on the websites?) and rationally analyzing the choices is harder still.
(There are all kinds of reasons to do garage development, but in any given technology few of those reasons will be valid at the same time and those reasons will shift over time.)
I'd like to hear what other people's experiences have been with the path they've taken and whether those reasons would still be true today.
