A polite request has usually never been turned down. Just make sure it?s when there?s not a lot of water there, and no rain further upstream, as flash floods are NOT nice to get caught in Shocked

Polite request...

Yes, of course, I would have to make a special request.... I am not sure how to approach because alcohol has been a big problem, here, for years... isolation, no work, little gov. support. Unless they have imported the Alkalai Lake solution.... which was to kick out the priest and get 'born again' religion.... it has worked well, for Alkalai Lake. And I have been out of native matters since about 1998...... I am too white, you see, and I am too old to marry one of the band!  Shocked

Besides, I would have to learn another language, as if 1 and ten halves wasn't enough.   Cool

There is another problem.... the native belief is that what is in the ground should stay in the ground as its now part of the earth.

Don't think that will work.... The Dene philosophy is pure socialism.... If you HAVE, you share.. It prevents sinful ENVY. Envy, among hunter-gatherers is dangerous, when people should be getting along, happily, envy causes serious discord. There may be someone who envies my possession of a fancy metal locator, for instance. If one is married to a band member, but an outsider, they still share, and this would be the ideal setting. A bit much for some river detectin'.  Cry

"Squaw" is derogatory, In Cree, it is Iskwew, and Iskwesis, not sure about Dene but Chinook is Kloochman, and tenas kloochman. Tarzan say "napew neya, iskwew keya, atimwak weya." hmmmmm. or Moniaw, sooniyaw, anyhow! and Pukamahaw kotuk! (Hit him again.)

The old polite term was "country" wife.... that is 'wife of the country.' Another term, 'wintugai,' is too pejorative and expletive, to give translation. The only Dene I know is "Yah eh tay:" its a nice day, or good day. So, how does one talk to someone whose language one does not know? Major grounds for disrespect.

Another consideration, is some of my ancestors were traditional enemies to Dene.... but that does not seem to carry much importance, anymore.

Yes, Ive been divorced since 1979, with final decree in 1980..... I can not afford to be married or even common-law. My diabetes has taken severe affect on certain aspects, which would be entirely un-conducive, to married life.  Shocked

OK, I have been thinking, while babbling, being married into the band still would not overcome the "it belongs to the earth," problem. The elders would still disapprove.

Too bad about the diabetes, I feel for you, althou my health has made sure my pleasures don?t last as long as they used to, I still get them at the moment. Go see a Urologist, maybe he can help, it did with me (Prostate).

Not much chance with diabetes, its a nerve death thing, it even gets to your brain and pedal neuropathy is only one symptom (as in leprosy, the nerves in feet and legs, die, but from too much sugar,) although it does not seem to affect hands, its bad for eyes kidneys and liver, and especially bad for liver is the medication. I have been taking saw palmetto extract, and selenium, for 19 years, now I find out selenium contributes to diabetic eye degeneration. But  the results..... zero prostate problems.

Apparently diabetes, an auto-immune disease, is poorly understood, and often, hits aboriginal/ autochthone types who have inherited the super-efficient digestive system: the less you eat, the more efficient it gets, and tells you FOOD, all the time.  Man, I'm starving, now!  Grin

The only way I can combat the effects are keep my blood sugar down, do not eat, exercise, eat protein and fats, no bread (groan,) snack on protein, and/or non-starchy and non-sugar veggies. Cheese is good. NO milk and NEVER skim milk, the milk sugar is much increased in skim milk, besides I have lactose intolerance (another native thing.) Forget the no-fat regimen, it is BS, Olive oil (xtra virgin, green,), is good, but never heated sunflower oil (trans-fats,) and I have always avoided animal fats.

If I married into a band, as we were discussing, they would soon get tired of me telling them don't eat this and you have to lose some weight or you will get diabetes! I have seen (native) diabetes progress to no legs, then kidney failure, finally death, simply because the diabetic could not restrict his  eating and/or drinking.

Taking medicine prepared by the native medicine man, can work, or it can kill. Diabetes, for natives, is a totally new disease, one which medicine men know little about, and that includes "white" medicine men, too.

Guess I'm a fighter, not a lover!

I´ve moved back from the continent, moved to Worcestershire (Redditch) in Sept 2010, then Jan 2011 moved to NI. Nice place to live, but laws are totally different here LOL
