Where is General Murillo's gold?
About 700kg of gold coins, or 400,000 pesos in gold, sank with the SAN PEDRO DE ALCANTARA, in 1815, near the island of Margarita, off the coast of Venezuela.
This was the payroll for the Spanish Army, part of the expeditionary force, destined to reconquer the colony of Venezuela that had declared it's independence.
The Expeditionary force consisted of 22,000 men, between the army and the navy.
The Navy payroll, also 400,000 pesos, but in silver, some 11,000kg of silver coins, was mostly recovered from a depth of 24meters, over the following 60 years.
However, only 2 gold coins were recovered in the salvage operations.
There was also the plunder of the town of Carupano and the island of Margarita on board. The only known piece of plunder recovered in the salvage operations, is a diamond studded cross.
Is the rest of the treasure still on the bottom of the bay? Buried in the muddy sand in 24 meters of water?
