He describes a silver operation in his journal. If he was this careful about the location of that, his gold will be much harder to locate. This epitomizes the gold hoarder mentality and lends itself to my personal belief that nobody who hides treasure makes a map or marks a tree to help him locate it later. They keep the information in their noggin where it belongs.
