White birch of that size is no more than 20 years old. From the size of the image and the minimum distortion, it looks to me as if the image is less than 5 years old. It means, "Indian god Saptreeguy must use arrows to pass wind." I'd stay away from any caves nearby where you can hear snoring.

what about this marking on a very old tree that is suppose to be a huge tree but somehow its growth was retarted maybe because of malnutrition or something man made. is the tap root taken out or the inverted 'v' cut was due to disease?

this is in the mountains of central philippines where one of the bloodiest battle took place in ww2. even today farmers occasionally unearth bones of the japanese dead soldiers.

is the marking japanese? was it cut in the 40's? is it military code?

after studying the pic again i have to agree with golddigger that this tree is not old unless it has been stunted in some way.
do you have a pic showing the tree including the base?

I have been told this tree is a aspen (quakie). Some say they live to be 200 years and others say only 120. Supposedly these markings were documented as being seen in the early 70's in the Uintah mountains of Utah. I did not take a picture of the bottom of the tree!! Did not think to do that. Undecided

pandsagain - Individual Aspen trees live 40-150 yrs, but some Birch trees can live to 300 yrs.  And to complicate things further, there are many different types of Birch.  Hard to say which it is from the one pic. Huh?

The tree in the picture is not more than 20 or 30 years at most. That means the marking isn't from a time of antiquity but a modern pictogram of some kind. Maybe even a practical joke.

ill give it a try.  if thats an S i dont think it means south. i think it means superior or best way to reach goal.  the two arrows tells me to go north and warns me to look closer at the map it might not read as shows.  hence another reason not to go south as some might interpret the S.  the curved line between the arrows i first thought was water but since the two sets of = i think means a river then the curved line i would think means entrance from north incase you forgot the crossed arrows and S meant south.   the two eyes in the middle mean to look for another marker within 50 yards or so or stand in line with them and see what they are looking at for direction.  i need to see a little higher on tree where the line and dots are.  i can see around 12 dots above the line but wonder if the line ends or has an angle on left there.  anyway  if i had to guess it would be:  go 1200-1300 yards, you will cross a river and once you climb out of the river to higher ground then you go 200 - 300 yards to a gathering area or year round water.  was fun but im not the best map reader just like figuring them out.  chad
