Go Up Go Down

Hi all:

Update to the EMI issue we were having here in Indianapolis - Friday, during the day, I was able to max out my PAG on my DFX . . . still running stable.  The only negative was I had a couple of strong, repeatable, high VDI signals that I dug and dug, only to find there was nothing there after several inches of digging, even down to 10" (In Indiana, most places have clay below 8" - so stuff rarely goes below that).  The depth given by pinpointing was about 3.5".  I eventually gave up on both signals having that nagging feeling I left a big piece of silver in the ground.

Anyone else have something like this?  Thoughts on what it might be?  Iron?  Odd wiring?  (something else besides "infuriating" might be good  Wink  )

Many thanks folks!  Hope the Labor Day weekend is heaping silvers on your table!

Problem may be the Clay.      Some types are conductive. Cool

Thanks Homefire!

I didn't consider the clay my be metallic . . . sometimes it is hard enough to make you think it is made of metal!  Thanks for offering up the suggestion.

Not made of metal but can contain some.

Could even be a corroded to nothing object of some sorts as well. Huh?

Years ago I was puzzled by the reaction of my Discovery TF900 on a patch of land, Many "ghost" signals which when dug only produced clay of a greyish-barley color. Yes some clays can be electrically conductive. This article can explain more:

Hey Homefire just shook the cobwebs loose, mine has gone off on a fire pit.  Changes in the soil from ash can be enough to set off the detector.  I dug and dug only to chase the ash.

Just a thought.

LOL here we go again.

Coal Ash can not only contain Metal salts messing with you but can also be Radio Active.

It can make things look like Metal.

Yes some Clay is Radio Active too.

Go Up Go Down

All:

Many thanks for some of the most helpful links I've seen on the subject!  Went out today and had a few chirps (usually wrap-around signals) but no hits like I had the other day. I'm thinking of asking a hunting buddy of mine to go with me back to the same spots (if they still signal), so he can scan with his E-trac to see if he gets the same response.  I'm betting it is the clay, but it would be a shame to leave a silver in the ground when it cried out for rescue  Wink

Again, thanks to all of you for chiming in.  Makes me happy this is the hobby that spoke to me and that we each help where and when we can.
