Hello All!  My name is Jay.  AU has asked me to monitor this thread to help anyone with metal detector technical questions.  You are probably asking who is this guy and why should I listen to him?  Well, I know I am new to the thunting forum but I am not new to electronics or metal detecting.  I have been metal detecting since I was a kid and just recently really started to get back into the hobby.  My current metal detector of choice is the Garrett Ace 250 but I am looking to upgrade to the AT Pro soon (I am a Garrett and Bounty Hunter Dealer).  I currently live in New Jersey and love searching the shore and historic sites around the area.  As far as my background in electronics, I have a B.S. and M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from Purdue University (Go Boilers!) and love tinkering and designing 'things'.  I recently have started a metal detecting robot based on the hardware of a wheel chair (I will keep you posted).  I am very familiar with all types of electronics including analog, digital, RF and firmware(my microcontroller of choice is the Atmel ATmega series).  I will try my best to answer everyone's questions to the best of my abilities.  So..Hello to all and Happy Treasure Hunting!

Welcome, Jay. You will find yourself among several experts in the field of electronic design and troubleshooting. We have several boards here dedicated to the building and design of detectors. Enjoy yourself while you are here.

Metal detector technology is not normally taught in engineering schools so learning the basics is essential. Look around here and you will see dozens of informational posts regarding the design and use of these highly sophisticated devices. And don't hesitate to call on us crusty old engineers with decades of design experience behind us.

Thanks for the welcome!  I am here to help the best I can and also learn along the way.  It is the "crusty old engineers" as you put it that definitely know the tricks of the trade.  These are the people who always teach me the most.

I find the best information on modern technological advances can be found in the US Patents sites in the abstracts. The theory is often explained in great detail. Go here and sign up if you aren't already a member.

It's free, like it says, and membership is required to download the patents themselves. The downloads section here is overrated with nothing beyond what you find at Geotech. A few exceptions, naturally, but most of the rest beyond the projects is related to treasure rather than technical.

As has been mentioned, Xavier is in the midst of a complex PI project. He is doggedly determined and nothing will put him off. He is able to learn what he must to accomplish his goals. Eugene52 is absent for the time being having work related things keeping him from here. When he gets back, he will also be delighted that you have joined. Homefire is technically minded but a bit out of practice. I could keep going but you'll meet all the players soon enough.

I'm glad you found us.

GoldDigger,

I agree that patents are the place to really learn the basics of metal detector design.  Thanks for the link to the patents site.  I was using the terrible uspto.gov site to find the patent numbers and then using pat2pdf.org to convert to pdf for saving.  I look forward to meeting everyone and contributing to the site anyway I can.
