One great tip, once you've gotten permission from the homeowner, is to come prepared with some old coins in your pocket.  Something not too valuable, but old enough for the homeowner to be excited about.  Then when you're done detecting, you can give him the old coins you "found" in his yard, while you can hang onto any more valuable finds.  A little sneaky, but everyone's happy!
