Something else I use occasionally is a probe. Sometimes it's hard to pinpoint the exact location so you use something like piano wire mounted on the end of a piece of broom handle. Just make sure you sandpaper the end to get the rough edges off of it. Just keep sticking  it into the ground SLOWLY until you get some resistance. This works really great.

You just can't beat the advantages of a good probe like that.  I use a brass one myself.  Take it everywhere with me.

You can't go wrong with a Lesche or Wilcox digging tool.  I've abused mine so much, but they keep on going.

I'll swear to a Lesche tool.  They can handle the beating and will dig through all sorts of conditions.  I've got a Lesche model 76 myself.  One of the handiest tools a person can have if they are digging.
