Don't forget that damp ground will help bring out the halo effect.

The smaller coil will see the smaller objects.

The larger coil just cant see the smaller things it can.

Ya just have to pick your poison on that one.

I think it all goes back to what you want to hunt.

Don't know about depth, but you will cover a lot more ground with the larger coil. The smaller coil is great for real trashy areas where you need to get in between the trash.

I love the 4" coil. My plan is to use it first to get the stuff closer to the surface, then switch to the 8" to hunt the deep stuff.

The short answer is yes, you will get better depth overall. The long answer is complicated.

Air tests will give you a relative testing result for each coil. It's not at all definitive. In dry soil, you will probably match your air test or get slightly less depth. In wet soil, you will likely get more depth than the air test - up to a point. Supersaturated soils are not good for low frequency penetration by your coil field and worse on the receiver sensitivity. A test garden will actually have a varying result based on the soil condition.

Most serious hunters take along both coils. Changing them takes but a few minutes and can make a difference in the success of your outing. As has been mentioned, the area beneath a 4" coil contains a sharper, more defined search area. The wider area of the 8" coil gives you more coverage but the tendency to miss targets is greater because the shape of the field is like an ice cream cone, not flat and straight all the way down. The tip of the cone all the way to the coil is sensitive but the shape means you can miss more unless you do many close overlaps during your search.

Practice is the answer. In the process, you have lots of fun finding treasures of the tiny kind.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Theres some easy ways to work out roughly how much depth you will get from a coil and after that Physics takes over
