Hi,
Found a good serial datalogger (freeware) for the pocket p.c. (ipaq and the like).
Seems that a pretty good "ERM" could be made fairly easily using the pocket p.c. as a storage medium.
Front end shouldn't be too hard to design.

As long as you know what you are expecting as data and in what format, anything that logs data can do the job, including a device that has any kind of spreadsheet. The Ipaq expects 8 bit data. That program can't accept data in two packets. Each packet has to be unique. Also, if your data output is like most modern dataflows, it will have a single code for skipping a batch of data followed by how many bytes are being skipped. I have an Ipaq and might download it to try later.

Hi GD!
I was thinking along the lines of using a PIC on the front end to control what's output to the pocket pc.
The programming ought to be fairly straight forward............ or am I re-inventing the wheel here?  Idiot

A PIC is capable of accessing memory of 64kbytes times 255 chips. That's 16mbytes of data storage using I2C memory. If you use an SD card of 1gbyte or larger, addressing it is more tricky than data storage. Look at this accessory. It comes with data on how to use it with a PIC or PICAXE.

I have one coming in the mail which I ordered last week. We must be on the same wavelength. Are you my twin, separated at birth or something?

How about that price? And direct shipment in England for you! They ship here from an Oz warehouse.

I'm looking forward to using it. The interface is SPI, which is the three wire interface for the PIC and PICAXE. Should be easy to directly access the first bank and use that first bank to build an index to access the rest. As you might guess, direct access with an 8 or 16 bit processor is not possible but indexed access is possible.
