The challenges of metal detecting?

I know the list is long and it most certainly has been discussed.  From the newbie to the golden veteran we overcome challenges each time we think of going out to metal detect.  With all the new members with a machine, me included, and those that are thinking of getting into the hobby something may come up that is new to someone.

So, that is the question.  The challenges of metal detecting?

Ok, I Will start.

First challenge, I do not have a metal detector.  The Garrett Ace 150 would be the best way to go.  Reason number 1 price, 2 built quality, 3 resale value.

There are two major challenges to metal detecting. First is finding a place to detect where you have a reasonable expectation of finding a treasure or two. I'm not talking about chests full of gold but tiny treasures, gained one by one. To find them, you must find a place where people gathered in great numbers and gathered often. Wherever people gather, they lose things.

Second is finding a target when you get there. Slow and steady searching will help you to find huge numbers of targets. Some will be treasures but most will be trash. A good state of mind is required to accept the fact that you will dig 10 pieces of trash for every keeper. And those would be the good side of the odds. In some places, I have found closer to 20:1 or even 50:1 trash to treasure ratios.

Yet here I am, decades later, still finding my fortunes one tiny bit at a time.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
