John (not his real name) had a map that showed him where a long-ago 1850s schoolhouse had stood, and he knew the name of the farmer who owned the property.

John's dilemma: How to ask permission? What to do, what to say, what NOT to do or say?

In this show, I discuss the approach John used, and then I give my own thoughts on what John did right, and what he did that maybe wasn't so right, and what he could have done instead.

It's not so hard!   One day my dad and I was hunting Dove.   We Stopped at the Farm house and asked the occupant ( Farmer) if we could grab some of the Sweet Corn.   He got this Weird look on his face.   Said Follow Me.   Took us to a shed and handed us two Bushel Baskets.  Said Fill em up to the Brim.   Your the only ones that have asked in five years.

I've always found the best method is to be friendly and honest and up front about it.

I've added a sticky to this article since one of the most frequent questions beginners (and other detectorists have) is "How do you get permission".

good topic ! we have to keep our hobby in a positive light it makes it easier to get permission . sometimes i share what i find  it maybe a family members object and they may want it  i can relate to that  and its good to talk to people they can give good clues to how & were things were years ago that can aid your searchin .

I wanted to add there are some sights  that use Sat images   that can help a person find ownership or who owns the land and see its borders . very important when it comes to getting permission and staying were you have it .
it will list past owners and dates some of the structures were built  (but not always accurate)  but a good indicator .
