We are still hunting the same property and spent a good part of the day swinging and digging. We have been uncovering some old hand tools and of course a lot of scrap (mostly nails). I am starting to get a handle on nail id before we dig as I become more familiar with my MD. The problem I have is with shotgun shells. We have dug up quite a lot of them and they don’t seem to give me any kind of consistency in tone or numerical ID. Can anyone tell me why these shells would produce different results on my MD or do I need a different approach?  We did find a 20 Gauge Win. shell that was red rather than the usual yellow in color.

The shape of the shell and its orientation in the ground make it impossible to detect and ID reliably. From one angle, it has an enormous surface area while from another, a mere ring. From the side, another signature. Flip it around in front of your coil during an air test and see what I mean.
