The basic problem is that your detector will measure how well a certain metal will pick up electricity. Now a can is just about the same in this aspect like for example a silver coin or foil. So your machine will unfortunately be sometimes misleading.
However if you can't dig it up within a few inch depth it is for sure no coin but in most cases a can.
Last week I had hunted a field on which I dug up around 30 cans. That's been awfull! Every single one was producing such a good signal. As I was detecting for silver coins (which had allready been found by me on that field some years ago) I always gave it another trie ... and cursed the can manufacturer at the end of the day
