If your talking about the coil in a foot or so of water sure. I would seal were the coax cable goes into coil with some silicon and put a plastic bag around the box. Not sure how well the # 4 works in salt water maybe BA or spooky can let us know.

Well......I don't have any first hand experience with the F4 and saltwater, but I can tell you Fisher Labs says
"  Salt water beaches present
special problems (mineralization) and you
must determine if you will only shallow
wade (with just the coil under water) or
desire a totally submersible machine
suitable for deep water wading or diving.
All quality metal detectors have
submersible search coils but not all control
boxes are waterproof or suitable for the
pressures of deep water diving."   (page 5 of

Fisher also list the F4 as 'recommended for beach hunting'
If it were MY machine, I'd probably take it into the water (after taking the precautions that Seldom mentioned), but I wouldn't take someone else's F-4 in unless they have already done so.   Smiley

smart man----the way I look at it, if you aren't willing to go at least waist deep (which means risking submerging your control unit), you're probably better off staying out of the water and working with the tides.    I wouldn't want to risk submerging any of my control units, but i'm not going to worry if a 'rogue wave' gets my coil wet.

My choice at the beach would to pay attention to the tide tables so I can get the maximum beach hunted at low tide.
