Steve, My personal opinion is that wet ground or damp ground seems to help my md by finding deeper targets. now i wont search in the rain or nothing but going out the next day after a good rain always seems to help. and around here it makes the red clay easier to dig for sure.

On VLF detectors going over a spot of wet grass can mess with the Ground Bal enough to produce a Ring (Beep) some times.

This is a good question, Stevieo. Water in any form near the sensing element of a detector does affect its performance and it's not always in a positive way. For the most part, water on the surface means that there is dampness in the soil. This can enhance performance greatly. Overall performance, that is, which is a combination of all factors including the coil. Water on the grass alone can either enhance or detract from performance because the water may affect the capacitance of the tuned circuit of your machine. Depending on the amount of water and the tuned circuit design, it could be a large factor. In a Double D coil, the design makes it unlikely. In a single loop PI, it is meaningless. In double loop VLF/DR machines, it can make them warble. Again, this depends on circuit design rather than just the coil alone.

Hi ya'll GD would this not have an effect like waving ya coil over water meaning that the machine would not be ground balanced properly, and when detecting near water and you G/Balance and when you put the coil in water you have to re ground balance

Ground Bal on the Dry sand then move over to the Wet sand would do the same.

Moving from Wet sand to In Water yet again .

It will be more Prevalent in Salt water.

Certain targets have a halo, a mineral ring around them. When the ground is wet, it is bigger and the target bigger. When it is dry, the the ring is smaller, and the target is smaller. Ever see green from a dime or quarter when you pulled it out of the ground? On dry ground I will get a signal. then loose the signal once the dirt is moved. I still can find the target, usually small with patience or a pin pointer. In my case, my auto ground detector balance works better with moist soil and the proper settings. This is for coin shooting, not beaches or streams.
