Wow! I happened across the link to this discussion while spending yet another sleepless night in hopes SOMEONE found my daughter's ring. While I understand you are "treasure" hunters, here is a story that may or may not make you think next time you find a school ring.
My daughter was 12, going to be graduating from middle school in a year. Her Grandmother (my Mother) bought her a graduation ring. A week after receiving the ring, 10 days before my daughter's 13th birthday, my Mother was killed in a car accident. My Mother lived with us and helped raise my children. For 2 years, I have been praying and searching to find that ring for my devastated daughter who lost the last gift her Grandmother gave her. While that ring might fetch you a few dollars, I have offered rewards worth 100 new rings to put a smile back on my daughter's face.
