Xavier,
I'm also interested in this mod to the Surf PI from Silverdog.  I built the kit and am in process of making the coil.  What exactly does it do?  It's unclear from the above posts.

Thanks for posting the pinpointing switch function. However, I have noticed there are two versions  UndecidedIdea. First one using an open circuit breaker to force the pinpointer function (yes i noticed the open and closed descriptions are backwards Grin) and second being a switched resistance type using a 1M ohm resistor. Which version is the best? I would probably go for the second as this would have less an effect on the IC's? or does it not really matter?

Another point i would like to ask about is, I have seen reported is that transistor Q2 (TIP32C) can be prone to overheating and its suggested to replace this with a IRF9640 MOSFET, is this the case? as i would like to keep this operational for a reasonable amount of time?

Thanks for all your help, i'll get all the parts/kit ordered soon, so i can get on with the build. (I might post my build progress in stages for others to see.. just have to see how much time i've got available ... might be a slow build  Undecided )

Dragon, Silver dog uses the IRF.

Yes, I too am going the route with the two Resistors.

There is no need to change any thing on the detector apart for the additional resistor for the pin pointer. If the IRF starts to get hot then there is a problem with the coil.

Mod B is the best option. The open circuit Mod A might cause instability in the first stage op amp LM358. That 1M resistor will keep that from happening. The capacitor would isolate it in a perfect world but the opening of the switch causes a change which will be fed back via the capacitor. The effect is that you defeat the capacitor isolation momentarily. The resistor in Mod B reduces that issue to nearly zero.

Thanks, Xavier. One other thing I forgot to mention and I'm sure you'll agree is that any mods should wait until after the project is working. You and I both had a few issues to deal with before it was working correctly and adding a mod only increases the likelyhood of inducting a problem.
