I actually posted this up for someone on another thread, but some of you might find it useful (especially for hearing weaker signals) if your detector has a fairly low output on 'phones.
It's an "Audio Booster".
(They sell are very similar thing here as a "detector signal booster for about $65!!!  Shocked)

Definitely less expensive than buying a commercial headphone amp.

Nice. Thank You.

bgmicro has mono and stereo preamps for $15 for those looking to buy instead of build(although, it IS a kit! haha) allelectronics seems to have similar if not the same, kits for cheaper as well as others.

What do you all think about incorporating an actual preamp into the above circuit? Something like a LM382N Low Noise Dual Preamp I am thinking.

What would you need a pre - amp for?Huh??
The hard works already done for you in your detector, there is already an amplified signal coming from there.
This circuit is just meant to give it a bit of an audio "boost".

haha Yeah, I guess the 'pre' would need to be in the detectors circuit before the output eh. Thanks! Gotta get the ole brain back into electronics mode. Smiley

Thinking about putting a "compressor/limiter" stage in there so's it doesn't blow your ears off with a loud signal but amplifies the weaker ones.
What do you think?

Interesting stuff. I've been toying with the idea of making an
inline amplifier to my headphones. The commercial ones are
too expensive if you ask me.  Around $100.  What are those
round things on the super stereo ear kit? Are those
jacks? Could this be modified to put headphone jacks in? Has
anyone here made their own?

AAh. Ok. Sorry. I see now that those are microphones. Not quite what is needed. I
found some amps that might do the job but may need to modifications for what
I'm talking about. Just needs to have on/off, volume, and two jacks-one in and
one out.

Thats exactly what this is.....
Cost you all of a few dollars and works really well.
I'll knock up a stripboard layout and post it to make things easy...

Thanks Paul A.  I'm really interested in giving this a
shot but since I'm not an expert on this stuff, need
all of the guidance I can get.
