I AM LOOKING FOR A 10" OR 12" COMPASS SCANNER XP PRO SEARCH COIL, BUT I CAN NOT FIND ANY ONE, SOMEBODY KNOWS HOW BUILD ONE? THIS MACHIN WORK AT 13.77KHS, THERE IS A RELATION BETWEEN FREQUENCY AND NUMBERS OF TURNS? OR JUST I NEED TO CHECK THE IMPEDANCE OF MY 8" COIL AND BUILD ONE BIGGER WITH "X" NUMBERS OF TURNS BUT THE SAME IMPEDANCE? SOMEBODY CAN HELPME?. TANKS A LOT, ANY OBSERVATION IS WELCOME.

If you check the impedance and can get a close match, you will be sure to maximize your results. The only thing that can throw a monkey wrench into the works is if there are other components in the coil such as a capacitor or two. The number of turns, wire size, coil diameter, type of insulation and type of winding will all affect impedance and therefore affect frequency.

I think Compass is now out of business so there are two options for you to find out absolutely for certain what's inside. You can X-Ray the coil at a lab or you can sacrifice one that you can buy second hand at a detector shop. Another option is for someone to come along and read all this who already knows the answer.

I have also split this topic from the original so it will stand out more and get more attention to your needs. Try and remember to start a new topic when you ask a new question. It can easily get lost in a long topic thread like the one you used.

Good luck.

WoW!   I robbed this from another forum.  Its the old 6" coil.   Seems Compass used tuned circuits on the TX and RX.

Man! Oh Man!   I think I would keep looking for a used one some place.

 Great

I had a distinct recall of that being the case. Funny how memory works. It's all in there. We just need a stimulus of some kind to get it out again.

Im stupid!

I would be stuborn and find a old coil.

Use the guts .

Remember that you need to reduce the coils of the windings by half doubling the coil size.

Here is the housing:

Measure the Z and H of the coil you have and go from there.
