or anyone else who might have an idea:

I'm looking for a source / manufacturer for a device like this (used for an automatic cable reel). The German manufacturer want Euro 4500.00 for this part whoch is not only above my budget but I think also way over the top. Any suggestions are most appreciated.

Best wishes,

Christian

Hello Eugene,

unfortunately the special part I posted above is needed to handle 900 feet of cable or more. Otherwise you will no able to wrap it around the reel in good order.

Best wishes,

Christian

Well, it is more complex / problematic. Take a look at this short video to see what this special part is meant to do:

You you might need a follower for rope, but for steel wire a four way roller is all you usually need. I have several winches, the largest is a 20 ton with 300 feet of 5/8 inch steel cable. The cable always rolls out and in with no problems using only a four way roller in front of the winch. If you want a follower to keep things neat they are a standard accessory item on most any winch.

Four way roller

When using rope a Capstan Winch is the way to go. It does not matter how long the line is it just keeps on pulling. As the line feeds in just coil the rope in a figure eight pattern into a keeper box for storage. It will not tangle and will feed out again with no problem.

Neat idea on a DIY homemade winch. Replace the hand crank with a motor.

Hello John,

unfortunately I think these systems are not capable of handling several hundred meters of cable by winding it in neat and regular windings. That's why the part I am looking for is so expensive as it seems to be they key to it.

Regards,

Christian

Christian; Find a industrial junk yard in your area. There should be many old cranes lying about. On them will be winches with followers of different sizes. You should be able to buy them at a good price. Smiley

oRo , Nice work posting the "do it yourself " winch project . I agree with everyone , you need to find one with a moving guide , that winds the cable neatly so it does not get tangled . 1000 feet is easy to get tangled up in the drum , it can be very dangerous if it snaps !!...................Best Regards..............Eugene52

Hello Christian,

Looking at your video the coils don't look neat enough. the wire guide travel may not be matched to the spool width and wire diameter.

Is it electrical wire or load carrying steel wire( such as a crane wire drum)? Both can be damaged.
