Yeah... that makes sense!
Actually, I think he mentions (on the "enhanced" version) how to fully extend the frequency range.
Now mine's working.... I'm not gonna mess with it anymore!  Grin Grin

Been playin' around with the "bat listener" for a few hours.
It's real surprising what things produce ultra high frequency sound!
Transformers, light dimmers, the fridge.... jangling bunch of keys .. all sorts!
Fascinating stuff.
I tried "listening" to a few geodes to see if they were hollow by tapping them with a metal screwdriver.
A couple did make a slightly different sound but not much (haven't cracked them open yet).
One possibility might be to build an "ultrasonic transmitter" (not difficult) place the geode on the transducer of the transmitter and see if there's any difference in volume between a hollow and solid one... kinda like "ultrasound scanning".

Cool Beans!     All that would take is a 555 and transducer.

Followed Homefires suggestion and built up a little transmitter on a bit of "breadboard".
The results are pretty promising.
messing around with it you can tell quite easily, for instance whether a bottle or tin is empty, full, half full etc.
You get a kind of variation in the sound level and frequency.
I would think with a bit of refinement someone could quite likely come up with a useful little device for checking if something is hollow (geode?).
They are so easy and cheap to build (Hell, you could probably pirate most of the parts from one of those old "polaroid" cameras that used "sonic" rangefinding!)
Someone else build one and we can compare results!  Smiley

I have the 555 and a few transducers in the Parts bin.

Gotta find the parts for the Bat machine.

Try this transducer. The T/R40-16B.

See the attached PDF. It's even waterproof.

LOL!   I remembered I had a 555 thing I built to work as a Harmonic generator. Poor mans RF Generator.   I did make it work as a TR detector, Kiddy Class one time.  Transistor Radio and all.

Pot adjustable.

I was feeding a coil with it but just replaced the coil with the transducer.

OH Boy , do I know it works.

I have no less then six dogs and all of them went Ballistic when Powered up.

What a HOOOOT!

I have three of them I got from JayCar here in Perth. Looking forward to trying them on another project. Shall I pick a couple of them up for you and send them or can you locate them in the UK?
