Go Up Go Down

All, looking for a little advise for a friend. he has a Whites Prospector detector that is 6ish years old and about 2 yrs ago it started acting up. after about 20 minutes of use it will go to a solid sound no matter what settings it is on. if you turn it off and back on still same thing. anyone had this problem or know what to do to figure out what is causing it?

thanks for any help.....
J

Welcome from New Mexico.

Sounds like it needs to go to the Dr. at Whites.

It could be a discrete component has gone dead bug.

Open it up and have a look at the capacitors on the boards. The electrolytic capacitors can fail in the most disturbing way. They swell up or even expand and fall apart. They are the tall, round ones with the plastic coating on them. Look for the tops and/or sides to be disfigured as a dead giveaway.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Golddigger has given you good advice.  The main tell here is that it takes a little time for whatever component is bad to heat up and fail out of tolerence.

You could do things like get a temp sensor that can read each component without touching them.  Kinda like a laser gum but not the bigger ones that you might see an air conditioning tech use to check your cents.  If you see a cap that looks like it is getting hot and could be causing the problem then you can even trymaking it heat up VERY CAREFULLY until it reaches THAT TEMPERATURE and see what happens.

I should warn you that I do some things that might not be advisable to others so if you are truly looking for the smart thing to do just send it in for repairs.   That is always the best thing in the long run because these units seem to be very finely tuned and when a problem like this has been happening for a while you can pretty much bet that there is more than one stressed component in the circuit board.

On the other hand, if you make it a point not to go to crazy with your troubleshooting and just stay within yourself (grasshopper) then you can always send it in after you give up.  I am not an engineer, just a experienced technician who knows not to go too far with most things.

Hi, look for a bad coil conection. I've sem  a similar problem in one unit and the problem was not in the unit but in the coil connector.
