Haven't got it yet, but as soon as I do I'll post it.

OK dudes & dudettes I just got my antique White's Gold Master and yes I mean antique, this baby uses vacuum tubes which requires some serious volts.  It uses 3 batteries: 1 ea. eveready W-353 1?V, 1 ea. eveready No. 467 67?V and a old standard 9V, here's the other pertinent info,

Model No. GMS 63
Ser. No.   A-1236
Coil is a 12 1/8 sandwich of what seems to be 1/8" resin (probably flat wound coil) in between masonite with an 8 3/16 hole that is offset 1 11/16 from center.  The pole connector is folded and riveted AL with 2 screws holding it to coil and 2 longer screws w/baketite nuts to mount the pole.  I thought for a moment that the cable was too short but after assembly it took 3 trips around the pole to take up the slack.
the numbers on the coil ( L & R ) are as follows, BTW the coil is center tapped:

Pin Nos.        L             R

1>3............695uH       5.72ohms

1>2............173uH       2.81  "

2>3............200uH       3.04  "

Thats all I have for info at the moment.

TTFN,
Dennis

A further update on the Gold Master, I checked on the batteries and the 67?V is still available at $50 bucks a pop (ouch), the 1?V is long time discontinued but I could parallel 3 "D" cells and get better AH than a single.  I haven't popped the can yet to eyeball the circuitry thats next after I put something in my tum-tum.

Later,
Dennis

What a Hoot.

Serial, 8, 9 volt batteries together to make the 67.5.  (Grid Volts)

The 1.5 can be a couple of D cells in Parallel.   (Filament Volts)

The 9 volt battery would have been the old Block type.   Two 9volt in Parallel would do the job.  Not sure what that was for, Audio?

If the tubes are strong and have not Leaked out it should fire up.

What you going to do?   LOL!

That's a good idea with the 9'ers for the 67.5v, the 9v is your standard snap top batt..  I think the 1.5v would probably be the grid voltage, the 67.5 would be the plate voltage and the 9v would be the audio.  There is also a 1?" tall 1kH crystal in a ceramic socket, 3 little txfmr's and 3 variable caps.

I'm a little troubled about what appears to be a large cap, unmarked of course, it's 7/8 square by 11/32 thick and there's an oily film on that end of the board with no other component that could have caused it.  I sure wish I had a schematic so i could determine what it actually was and it's value.

Back to investigating,
Dennis

Careful with the leaky cap. If it is metal case and leaking oil, might be PCB contaminated. That unit is in the age of PCB capacitors.  Wash your hands after handling, and don't eat or snack while your working on it. Hopefully you can find a schematic and just replace the cap.

What a Hoot.

Last time I built anything with tubes was in the early 70's.

Sorta forgot that stuff.

Yup I know about PCB's for about 16 of my 20 in the service I worked in radar with pulse transformers that used insulating oil and the best oil had PCB's as did all transformers in the high voltage PS & pulse forming network.  When we were shutting down the AN/FSS-7 on Mt. Hebo, OR one of the civilians from depot got some oil on his hands and went absolutely catatonic wanting some place to wash his hands.  Like I said I worked with it for 16 yrs. I'm 68 now and in almost perfect health.

I know what you mean Homefire, when I went into the Air Force in "64" tubes were still the norm and when I retired in "84" they were all but history.  The last equipment I worked on still used a klystron pwr. amp. to send commands to satellites.  the system before that used all solid state and was totaly under computer control.

I did a little surgery on those batteries and the 1.5 was 2 super long "D" cells in parallel and 67.5 had 45 1.5v sections in 3 stacks in series, cool.

Gotta do din.

Later,
Dennis
