Biggest scope I've ever had was a 3" reflector.  Never could scrape together enough cash to buy a big one.  Over the years I've drifted away from using the telescope much.  Still enjoying sitting out at night and observing with binoculars and eye!             Wise

I use binoculars, too. I had a small reflector, a Smith Cassegrain with a motorized ball type base. Over this past 12 months, we have had no more than 10 clear nights so I'm glad I don't have a scope any more. My favorite thing to see is Andromeda and with 10x50s, it's just beautiful. I can grab them on a moment's notice which makes them really great.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I like Andromeda, too.  Also like the Great Nebula in Orion.  I like to look at the Ring nebula in Lyra because it was one of the first items I spotted with my first small, cheap telescope.  It was so cool then, first learning the sky and seeing some of the unusual items not seen by the naked eye!

There is a lot to say about portablility and fast setup.  I almost always use the binoculars now too.

Here in SA we have the pleasure of not having light pollution well in town they do but out here it's great and when it's a good night I will put out a blanket lay on it and look at the sky I can often see the milky way. Excuse my naivety but what is the  Andromeda? can we see it here in SA?

My good friend X, Andromeda is our nearest neighbor as galaxies go. It is too far north for you to see. But... 'when you see the Southern Cross for the first time, You will know why you had to come this way'. I want to see the stars in your sky someday.

Ditto. I don't get to see the southern sky from here but I know what you mean about knowing the constellations. I know only a few. They come out after my bedtime.

More like 20h30 now a days. I like to work on a book for a while then lights out. Then the war department starts the day @ 0400 and away we go again.
