It proved to me how important it is to check out those unknown items in your pouch. I can't begin to imagine what it would have been like to have discarded it, thinking it was just junk. It truly was a find of my lifetime.

Congrats on that rare find!
I'd sure love to find something like that, but not very likely in Chicago.

Congrats on your find it is rare indeed!!, but just to add that in a civil war auction You may get a considerable amount more. It depends on how many dog tags have turned up over the years and was sold a private auction. Best Wishes ,,,,Rob

Such 'dog tags' were not military issue.   At the time of the Civil War individual identification tags or disks were not given soldiers but were sold by 'sutlers,' individuals who had a license to follow the armies and peddle merchandise, sort of a store keeper on wheels.    Most soldiers had no such item of identification which makes this particular one extremely rare.    I have found many Civil War relics and have never come close to even smelling one of those.    That is truly a find of a lifetime.   Congratulations.

Thanks for the input. I was aware that the soldier had to buy his own tag. That's why it meant so much to find it and be able to find out about him. Too bad he never had any children. I would have loved to have been able to trace grandchildren and get it to the family. He was married twice, but no children. Don't imagine I will ever find any better relic from the Civil War.

Congratulations on the gerat find. I thought I had found a confederate ID about six months ago but it turned out to be something else. It is still my best find to date and I will post the story of it later.
Mike,  Are you familiar with Camp Douglas in Chicago? If there are any detecting spots around it's location you might find some good stuff.
Here is a link to some info in case you are not familiar with the site
