I have seen rounds cook off and about 99% of the time, the primer pocket blows out from the heat or the case ruptures, leaving the bullet itself in a mangled case.
Most small arms short of 12.7 or .50 cal will not be very dangerous within a few yards.. bigger ones and those containing specialty tips "HE" or the like will be dangerous at longer ranges.
I think a lot of these myths are perpetuated by television and movies where somene throws a handful of bullets in a fire and they start "shooting around"
An "explosion" (combustion actually) will seek the path of least resistance.
This is why in a weapon, the bullet is propelled out of the barrel, like a cork in a champagne bottle.
Between the supported strengthy of the chamber, and the crimp of the bullet in the cartridge, the weakest point is the bullet.
Unsupported and loose, it is a crapshoot.... It could be the side of the shell, but it is most often the primer pocket that blows out.
I have never seen that happen.

I would be more concerned about them swallowing them...
 

I have used WD40 on rounds that I reloaded improperly, and i know it works completely.

To reassure myself, I have done it SEVERAL times with perfectly good rounds and then tried to fire them:
Nothing..

Cartridges are just an object.
Fear of these objects is perpetuated by individuals who have been misled by political motivations of others.
Look not to the object, (guns, knives, bullets) but to the actions of those who misuse them or are careless.
There is no reason to fear an object if you understand it.

I have attached pics of rounds 'cooked off' from Aircraft wrecks in the pacific.
While not the same as just 'going off, this is the same concept (round going off unsupported, and you can see that the shoulder of the shell just below the bullet or the primer pocket is what blows "out"


Did you recover most of these things in the same place?
because THAT is a lot of digging..

Cordite strands will just "fizz" unless of course you put them in a container..DO NOT PUT THEM IN A CONTAINER~!!!!.........if you remove them discard them they have no use .........HH....Johnnn
