Find them in the day time so you know where they are.

At night take a look at them with a Amber or Red lens ed flash light.

Amber Brings out the Contrast to your eyes much better then White light.

Red can show details otherwise not seen.

Try it at home first.

You will see what I'm talking about.

Thanks Homefire!, you also just led me to another idea.... Take a small mirror and tint it red, (or sandwich some clear red plexiglass or other clear red medium to a mirror). Now you have something usable during the day... either hold it perpendicular and on the rock face for a small area of red light, or mount it on a tripod and reflect the sun from a distance for a high intensity red. No more night ops...should be visible in direct sunlight. Thought I would share the idea anyways.. haven't tested it.

If you still have trouble snapping a photo, try doing a rubbing of the petroglyph with thin strong paper and artist's charcoal and take a photo of the rubbing.
