[hello]I am new to this board, and haven't actually started hunting yet. I'm still reading and researching which beginner detector to buy. It's fall here, and soon we'll be hitting the cold weather.  Could anybody who has had success at winter hunting tell me about it?

Thanks so much,
Titian

Welcome Titian.............Winter hunting isn't much different other than when it snows and the ground is frozen...I hunt all year in Virginia, even when it is near freezing temperatures. Warm clothes and gloves etc.. make it tolerable.

Someone else may add something more to help.

Good hunting mate.............................John in Virginia

Hello and  Welcome from NC. I started in Ohio years ago. I stayed inside during the winter.
Here in NC I don't really worry about the weather. There are plenty of members though that
can answer  your question. Start Detecting mate.ARR!

Welcome from the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon.   Welcome  We get plenty of snow and cold here, and I just can not handle the cold anymore so I don't detect in the winter unless we have thawed ground and a fairly warm day.  No snow hunting for me!   Detecting    Detecting

Welcome from CT. once the ground freezes forget it. Good time to take the water detector to Fla. Wink   It's a good time to do your research and get lined up for the spring.

Hello, Titian.   Winter hunting is my favorite hunting!   Of course, I live in the desert southwest where temperatures well over 110o F are common for extended periods of time during the summer (and the soil gets so dry and compacted that you'd need a jackhammer to did it even if it were cool enough to hunt).   So my summer is like your winter --- mostly downtime to concentrate on research, and planning and prepping for the next season, mixed with take advantage of the rare change in weather or an occasional change in location to get in some bonafide swingin' time.   As frustrated as the time of the year when you can't hunt is, if you spend it doing research at least two things might happen:  1) you'll come up with a great list of places to hunt once the soil thaws (and maybe even have your permissions all lined up) and 2) you might find out you really enjoy the research.

Welcome to the fun.

Welcome from Indiana  You can go in the winter. It's no fun wading through snow drifts and chiseling through ice, but yep you sure can! lol. I go until the ground freezes
